Down the middle
Title:  Down the middle
Description:  RF 65 rolls down track 2 after coming off the Main Line from Pinelawn. This could be a squeeze of any of the cars were wide enough. It was not uncommon for a faster moving train to bounce off the platforms. Note the PRR style pedestal signal to the right of the train.

RF 65
Title:  RF 65
Description:  I was knocking around Nassau County, shooting whatever rail activity I found, and went up on the platform at Hicksville. Freights on the Island at the time were a some time thing, and could be really unpredictable, since they were shoehorned between the many commuter trains. So it was pure dumb luck I caught this RF 65 coming in from off the Central Branch with a pair of MP 15s, the power that would lead this train for most of the next 30 years, and a short train. Note the Pennsy influence in the position light pedestal signals at the end of the platforms.

On the Main Line
Title:  On the Main Line
Description:  RF 65 approaches Hicksville station on the Main Line, coming in from Pinelawn. It will work the yard, just west of the station, then go back out to either the Port Jeff Branch, or to the south shore to work for the day, before repeating the process and returning to Pinelawn later in the day. Hell be tied up before evening rush hits. The position light signal at right gives away the LIRR's Pennsy heritage.

Arriving Glen St
Title:  Arriving Glen St
Description:  A Jamaica bound Oyster Bay train arrives at the Glen St station in Glen Cove. The station there is notable for being the location of a Maxwell House commercial years ago. Note the letter "P" preceding the road number. This MP15 is set up to provide hotel power for the train.

Oyster Bay train
Title:  Oyster Bay train
Description:  An Oyster Bay train is on its last lap to Jamaica passing the Queens Village station. In the distance, a Hempstead train is making its way through Queens interlocking, and will stop here. The tower can be seen just beyone the end of this train.

Port Jeff surprise
Title:  Port Jeff surprise
Description:  The MP 15 trailing this eastbound Port Jefferson train was not unusual. The GP 38 was. Must have been a power swap, and the GP was tacked on before the train left Jamaica. Interestingly, the two trailing units are the highest numbered in their respective classes. The 277 is named for LIRR president Walter Schlager.

Speonk scoot
Title:  Speonk scoot
Description:  In addition to the every 90 minute Patchogue "scoots" as the diesel powered trains that connected to the MUs at Babylon were called, there was a mid day run a little farther out to Speonk. We see the westbound train en route to Babylon passing PD tower as it slows for its Patchogue stop. There was also a mid day train to Montauk. Check the blue and yellow maintenance van.

Meet at PD
Title:  Meet at PD
Description:  The Patchogue scoot which has just arrived waits as the train from Speonk rolls into the station. Long Island had a number of working towers then, such as PD here, which is controlling the action.

By the tower
Title:  By the tower
Description:  Long Island had a number of towers still in service in the 80s. One of the busier ones was Nassau, just east of the Mineola station. It controlled a pair of crossovers west of the station, and the junction with the Oyster Bay Branch, as well as the interlocking at Locust Valley, where the branch goes to single track. At one time, it also controlled the switch to the line that went down toward Hempstead along Franklin Av in Garden City, which curved to the right of the building with the ivy at far right. That line was abandoned in the 1960s. We see a westbound Oyster Bay train coming off the branch behind power pack equipped MP 15 172. It will make its stop here, then run into Jamaica for NY and Brooklyn connections.
