IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local crosses Peach Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to a section of track which connects to a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Peach Rd. is now the northern terminus of the former SOO (originally W&N) main line that once ran from Neenah to Argonne (the small stack of ties rests upon the right-of-way which continued northward). This connector track was installed around the time that the C&NW main line was abandoned, to facilitate continued rail service for the nearby Shawano Paper Mill. There is a fair amount of flange squealing as the train traverses this nearly 180 degree arc with an approximately 700 ft. radius.

IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. That name still appears on some property records. The train is running on an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence at right surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard, which had its own narrow gauge railway, produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

Description:  A CN local passes the United Cooperative Feed Mill, 660 E. Seward St., and approaches E. Center St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Shawano, WI on 10 Nov. '18. Between 2015-'17, almost all of the feed mill's buildings were razed, and new, larger ones constructed during a nearly $7 million expansion project. The northern portion of this spur was laid where the SOO, originally W&N, depot stood from 1906 until the fall of 2013. E. Green Bay St./Hwy. 22/Hwy. 47/Hwy. 55 (and formerly Hwy. 29) can be seen in the background.

Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former joint MILW/SOO swing bridge and approaches one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the canal was excavated) at Menasha, WI on 16 Nov. '18. Train was headed back to Neenah from Hilbert. The facility partially visible at left is currently home to Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St. They purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities plant in Jun. '14. Looking northeast from a parking lot where a Menasha Wooden Ware Co. warehouse once stood. It was built between 1900 and 1906 according to the Sanborn maps. I do not recall when it was torn down, part of the foundation is still visible.

Description:  A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass and traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 14 Dec. '18. Train was returning from Menasha with 16 cars. The white building partially visible at right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly a Kimberly-Clark warehouse), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The north leg of the wye can be seen to the left of the locomotive. Beyond that lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. You can see that a large amount of fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation of pending improvements.

Description:  A CN local passes the intersection of S. Jackman St. and W. Water St. as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 1 Jun. '19. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The Atlas Paper Co. mill, 425 W. Water St., stands at left. Completed in 1878 and expanded over the years, it eventually became part of the Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C). The mill ceased operation ca. 1999, the year K-C donated it to the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame. After some of the additions were razed, the Hall of Fame opened its new home and its interactive museum, the Paper Discovery Center, on 26 Feb. ’05. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Description:  A CN local parallels the Fox River and approaches the S. Memorial Dr. bridge as it descends the grade from the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, down into 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 18 Jun. '19. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The Appleton Yacht Club and Lutz Park can be seen in the background. The former MILW right-of-way, granting it access to 'The Flats' from Menasha, runs along the opposite bank of the river. The line was abandoned in 1981 and the land has been reclaimed by nature, and the rich snobs who own the homes overlooking the river. About all that remains of this portion of that branch is one of the abutments for the MILW swing bridge that used to cross the river under the S. Memorial Dr. bridge. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks via a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug. '19. Local was headed for Waupaca. Local is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The north leg of the wye is in the foreground. Looking west from Arrowhead Park, a large pile of gravel provided some much appreciated elevation.

Title:  IC 3129 and EJE 703
Description:  A CN local passes the depot/yard office as it heads southwest past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Sep. '19. I believe the local was headed back to Neenah from Kaukauna and was slowing to stop here to pick up a string of cars. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. The MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893.

IC 9602 and IC 3129
Title:  IC 9602 and IC 3129
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Jan. '20. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.
