A CN local prepares to service the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Oct. '19. The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The former C&NW bridge spans the Fox River in the foreground, it was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. The mill's Rail King can be seen near the center of the photograph. Looking northeast from what was, until recently, Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the left).

Looking south over the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard from the Winneconne Ave. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Locomotives include EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568. I wish I could photograph this scene without the handrail in the foreground, but the morons who designed this overpass (with the tacit approval of the morons who pretend to be the local government) only incorporated a sidewalk on one side of the bridge, the north side. There is no provision for bicycles to safely cross the overpass, except to use the unusually narrow sidewalk. However, the sidewalk is too narrow for bicycles and pedestrians to safely pass each other. Sure, bicyclists are legally entitled to use the roadway, but you will risk your life if you are foolish enough to exercise that legal right. The majority of motorists drive like idiots on Winneconne Ave. (as well as just about every other freeway, interstate, highway, county road, country road, back road, gravel road, dirt road, access road, public street, private street, driveway, pioneer trail, parking lot, and all-too-often sidewalk, in the United States). The Main St. overpass was ill-designed in the same manner. This ineptly designed overpass was constructed ca. 1988, so we will probably have to wait 20 years, or more, for an overpass with sufficient sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

A CN local passes the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible beyond the lead locomotive. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

A CN local momentarily fouls Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 18 May '20. The facility at left is currently home to Alliance Industries, 313 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased the neighboring facility at 320 Appleton St. in 2005. They later purchased that facility as well as this one. I haven't found any relevant information about this structure, other than that it was built in 1960. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it. St. Mary's Church, with its ornate steeple, is partially visible to the right of the locomotive. The current church was built in 1883, but the congregation was organized in 1867. The gray building to the right, home of Drucks Plumbing and Heating Company, Inc., 314 Appleton St., was built upon the former MILW yard. The brown building beyond that, home of Menasha Employees Credit Union, 310 Appleton St., was as well.

A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the Main St. overpass as it heads north at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The parking lot to the left of the train was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the locomotive's cab. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. In the background, beyond the north leg of the wye, lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.

Description:
A CN local, with at least 41 cars, approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 3 Jul. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3110 and IC 9568 (with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling). The local is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. On both sides of the train you can see some brand new signals waiting to take over for the cool, old signals.

IC 9568
Description:
A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 29 Aug. '20. Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. Through freight had four locomotives, CN 3192, UP 5466, CN 3046, GTW 4619. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard.
