L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  Louisville & Nashville train No. 7 was arriving in New Orleans from Montgomery behind 4-6-2 280. No. 7 was a long-distance local and usually ran with just five cars, but today’s train has at least two sleeping cars on the rear. The train was coming off of the median of Elysian Fields Avenue, crossing North Peters Street and would run along the Mississippi River until it got to the railroad’s station about a mile away. The automobile next to the pole on the left was headed for the Third District Ferry landing, and the two wharves on the right occupy the site of a former Southern Pacific train ferry landing which was abandoned when the Huey P. Long Bridge opened in December 1935. An unidentified Lykes Lines vessel is docked on the right. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Pacific 280
Title:  L&N Pacific 280
Description:  Louisville & Nashville K-5 Pacific 280 was pulling out of the railroad’s Canal Street Station in New Orleans with a short northbound train at. The train was noteworthy because it had a combine in front of its baggage car. The 280 was a USRA design light 4-6-2 and was one of a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924. It was one of the last Pacifics built for the L&N and one of the last to be retired, on 23 April 1954. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Train No. 34
Title:  L&N Train No. 34
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 280 was awaiting the departure of train No. 34 – the combined Piedmont Limited-Gulf Wind – from Canal Street Station in New Orleans at 5:00 PM. The Piedmont Limited was bound for New York City via the L&N, West Point Route, Southern Railway, and the Pennsylvania; but between New Orleans and Flomaton, Alabama it included cars for Jacksonville via the Gulf Wind. Today's train was unusual because it had a combine ahead of its baggage car, probably a dead-head move. The 280 was a USRA design light 4-6-2 and was one a dozen K-5's (272-283) built by Alco-Brooks in 1924. It was one of the last Pacifics built for the L&N and one of the last to be retired, on 23 April 1954. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  In 1951-52 the Louisville & Nashville constructed a shoo-fly at Franklin Avenue in New Orleans, about midway between NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7) and N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7), so that an underpass could be built there. Southbound local No. 7 had just crossed the main line of the Southern Railway at NO&NE Tower, which can be seen in the left background, and was at the north end of the temporary trackage, passing a temporary approach signal for the New Orleans Terminal Co. crossing at N.O.T. Tower. This train was powered by K-5 class Pacific 280, built by Alco’s Brooks Works in 1924; and included a sleeping car on the rear, an unusual occurrence. New FP7 diesels officially replaced steam power on No. 7, as well as 9, 10 and 12, on 27 July 1951, the underpass was dedicated on 16 April 1952, No. 7 was discontinued in 1953 and the 280 was retired on 23 April 1954.
