Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1956. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1955, while #8610 was built one month later. Note the passenger-service air hoses just to the right of the coupler. Partially visible in the right background are portions of Juniata's 17th Street Bridge and the East Altoona Roundhouse.

Here is page five of a 15-page cover article by David P. Morgan entitled "World's Busiest Mountain Railroad." It was published originally in the April 1957 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 20. Photo by Philip R. Hastings. Photo Caption: "Cutoff man waves away 'Liberty's' helper." Partially visible here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5853 and #8610. #5853 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in September of 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. #8610 is an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in January of 1956 and rated at 2,400 HP.

Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 July 1958. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607, #8610, and an A-A set of GM-EMD EP-22's whose road numbers are not recorded. #8607 and #8610 are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1956, while #8610 was built in January of 1957. In this context, they're pulling a passenger train that's just leaving the Altoona Station and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the ALCo's will uncouple and return to this location and await another helper run up "The Mountain." 17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Spring of 1960. Shown here are PRR engines #8608 and #8610. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8608 was built in 1955, but #8610 was built in 1956. They are pushing a westbound mail/express train under the 17th Street Bridge. Also visible is N-5 Caboose #5010, for mail/express service only. The words under the number "5010" are as follows: "ASSIGNED TO PASSENGER SERVICE // RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY"

Magna Carta. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1961. Shown here are PRR engines #8610 and #8609. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. These locomotives pulled the "Magna Carta Special" to various locations in the Pittsburgh Region. The PRR's 12th Street Shop buildings are also visible on the left.

RR City. Here is an original photo that I took in connection with the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Railroad City Limited" in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8609, #8610, and #8606. All are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8609 and #8610 were built in 1956, but #8606 was built in 1955. They are running light to the Altoona Passenger Station where they will couple onto the 18-car "Railroad City Limited" for its journey out the Hollidaysburg Branch Line, up the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve, making a loop through the tunnels at Gallitzin, and then heading down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Altoona Station. This photo was taken adjacent to ALTO Tower, just short of the 17th Street Bridge.

All were built by GM-EMD. #5898 is an EP-22 built in 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Middle Photo: Shown here are PRR engines #8610 and another unit whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8610 is an APS-24MS built in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. These units are actually the rear-end "pushers" for the mail-express train pictured in the bottom photo.
