A CN local slowly bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 5 Mar. '22. Railroad employees have to flag the crossing and the crew has to sound their horn because the signals have been malfunctioning for several weeks. The CN has attempted to repair the signals but they haven't been able to locate the problem. According to an article in the Post-Crescent on 27 Feb. '22, "The only remaining remedy is for the railway to completely replace the crossing, including all of the foundation materials. That work cannot happen until the ground thaws and the hot-mix asphalt plants open in late April or early May." The interesting brick building partially visible to the left is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper), founded in ‘93. The last surviving partner retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. opened here in ‘77. |
