Weights are added or removed depending on the seasons and average temperatures so the catenary wire is always at the correct tension and height for fast running. |

The train now reaches speeds over 70 mph in this straight section since the track and catenary upgrade last year was completed. Cost prevented the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation Distric, parent company of the Chicago South Shore and South Bend, from replacing the wooden catenary supports but several sets of pre-1920's iron supports were replaced during the upgrade. |
