IC 3110 and GTW 6420
Title:  IC 3110 and GTW 6420
Description:  CN local momentarily fouls W. Prospect Ave./Hwy. BB while picking up a string of cars from the southwest end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on its way back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 25 Apr. '16. The local is spanning 3 communities at once in a peculiar spot of the sometimes confusing local borders. This section of the road is the border separating the Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI to the north (left) and the Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI to the south (right). The locomotives and the 1st freight car are in the Town of Menasha, the next 3-4 freight cars are in the Town of Grand Chute, and, thanks to an unnatural jog in the border, the remainder of the train, out of frame to the left, is in Appleton, WI.

Title:  IC 3110 and GTW 4924
Description:  CN local approaches Forest Ave. as it heads north via former SOO rails at Fond du Lac, WI on 4 Jul. '16. The SOO passenger depot stood just south of Forest Ave. on the east side of the tracks (out of frame to left), their freight station stood on the west side of the tracks, about where the pile of ties is. The tracks on the right lead to a rail customer on a remnant of the MILW branch line.

Title:  GTW 4907 and IC 3110
Description:  CN local passes the depot/yard office while preparing to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 1 Dec. '16. The local originated at Neenah and would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna and had one locomotive, GTW 4907. The Appleton-based local power, IC 3110, is parked on the right. A Ford F-550 MoW hi-rail, WC 177903, is parked between the locomotives.

IC 3110
Title:  IC 3110
Description:  CN local approaches the former Thilmany Rd. grade crossing and the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jan. '13. The train was too long to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. This is the first half, the remainder of the train was still parked on the grade leading up to the main line for. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. Train had two locomotives Illinois Central IC 3110 and CN 4704. Thilmany Rd. used to run past me up to Catherine St., but the course of Thilmany Rd. and Stribley Rd. were altered during the restoration of the original Thilmany mill (out of frame to the left). The road now curves to the left, underneath the lead locomotive, and it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter.

IC 3110 and CN 4704
Title:  IC 3110 and CN 4704
Description:  CN local crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jan. '13. Locals need to pull onto the bridge in order to clear the turnout which permits them to shove cars into the mill's stub yard. The rails now end at the opposite bank of the Fox River, but they used to continue to a wye at the intersection of Island St. and Dodge St. The north leg of the wye led to C&NW's Kaukauna yard and shops and on to Appleton Junction. The east leg of the wye led to Manitowoc, WI. The train was too long to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. This is the second half, the remainder of the train was spotted a few minutes earlier. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911.

GTW 5856 and IC 3110
Title:  GTW 5856 and IC 3110
Description:  A CN local bisects the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill, 825 E. Wisconsin Ave. (background), passes the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St. (partially visible at right), and crosses N. Lawe St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Aug. '18. Founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc. in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to a new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. Appleton changed its name to Appvion, Inc. on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18, and the greedy, corporate scumbags were permitted to cheat the employees out of $40 million in retirement benefits. The Tuttle Press Co. was founded at Elgin, IL, in 1898. They moved to Appleton in 1901, where they built a facility next to the Wisconsin Tissue Paper Co. on John St. They constructed a new facility at N. Union St. and E. Hancock St. in ’05. Over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block, as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. The company was purchased by Northern Paper Mills, Green Bay, on 18 Sep. ‘29. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a vile holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-‘70s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early ‘83, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. around 1990. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper and especially gift wrapping paper. There haven’t been any business signs on the building for several years. The nearest track used to split into several spurs to serve Tuttle Press, Luvata (formerly Valley Cast), Russel Metals, and Appvion, only the latter is an active rail customer. The guard rail at left marks the spot of the former N. Union St. grade crossing. Train was heading back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Title:  IC 3110 and GTW 5856
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. Franklin St. and N. Division St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 29 Aug. '18. The Mountable Raised Curb System with Vertical Panels (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) was installed back in May as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The Post Office is partially visible at left. The former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse is partially visible beyond the train at right. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Clark St. The current business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destroyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948. Furnishings unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to 1981. The building had painted signs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least 1981. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna.

IC 3110
Title:  IC 3110
Description:  A CN local is about to pass under W. Spencer St. as it curves southwest via former SOO rails at Appleton Junction, WI on 13 Sep. '18. Spencer St. forms part of the convoluted border between the Town of Grand Chute and the City of Appleton in this area. The train is traversing an unusual projection of the latter and will enter the former when it emerges from beneath Spencer St. behind me. It will also pass under the former C&NW main line behind me. Train was headed back to Neenah from Shawano.

IC 3110 and GTW 5850
Title:  IC 3110 and GTW 5850
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '19. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper); founded in ‘93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall (father and son). It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also served the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse, which stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service Fountain Lumber Co. (J. Fountain Lumber Co.), 129 N. State St., founded by John Fountain in 1897. Louis J. Marshall, the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. opened here in ‘77. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

GTW 5850 and IC 3110
Title:  GTW 5850 and IC 3110
Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it sets out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 23 Jun. '19. After finishing here, train headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible at right. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

Title:  CN 3845, CN 2982, IC 3110
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. and approaches a CN local as it heads northeast at the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Nov. '19. Through freight had two locomotives, CN 3845 and CN 2982. Local had one locomotive, IC 3110. The facility partially visible between the trains is home to Amcor Flexibles Neenah (formerly Bemis until Jun. '19, formerly Curwood, Inc.), 1815 Marathon Ave., Neenah, WI 54956, an active rail customer. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel on the other side of the trains.

IC 3110
Title:  IC 3110
Description:  IC 3110 parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 31 May '20. The building at right, 716 Harrison St., still used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, was recently (within the past week or two) spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors. The Winneconne Ave. overpass stands beyond that. It was erected ca. 1988 in order to eliminate the busiest grade crossing in the area. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.
