Description:  The action is heavy at the station throat. Ex UP 763 pushes the Southwest Chief into the station, as an ancient Conrail SW 1 pulls storage mail out of the Post Office for assingment to Amtrak trains.

Description:  Amtrak 763 pushes the Southwest Chief into the station, as a Conrail SW works the Post Office. The SDP40Fs were common power on western trains, though they were being steadily replaced by F 40s. The SDP40Fs had problems on a couple of western roads, most notably SP, for tracking issues and derailments. The Santa Fe didnt seem to have these problems, however, and did not restrict them. ATSF had experience with this type power, as it had FP 45s on its passenger trains, and seemed to know how to run them without incident.

Description:  Amtrak GP9 763 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 763 was built in January 1954 ( c/n 19094 ) as UP 208, retired by the UP in September 1976, sold to Precision National Corp., leased by Amtrak as Precision 208, rebuilt to Amttrak 763 in August 1977, eventually used by Amtrak in Los Angeles, California, sold to Chrome Crankshaft and moved to San Bernardino in November 1987.
